Many felt that One Piece should have been left unedited, as the whole show was originally intended. But, instead, there was an even larger outcry from those who didn't want to watch it censored. If 4Kids had left these such things in and still tried to play it Saturday mornings, there would have been a big brouhaha. Things like risque jokes and even racial insensitivity got cut out, and if the film is being marketed for children, one can see the logic behind this. When the film belonged to 4Kids, things deemed inappropriate for an audience of young children were edited. This movie is being released through FUNimation, which now controls the dub. And to that end, there's plenty of laughter to be found. Ultimately, Adventures in Alabasta is just another adventure for Luffy in his journey to become king of the pirates. But, again, if someone is a fan it's nice to get a ninety minute feature film starring favorite characters. The humor can be enjoyed by anyone, but watching a movie with no explanation of what has happened can leave newbies confused. Adventures in Alabasta is probably only something thoroughly enjoyable for One Piece fans. Everyone could use some time to kick back and relax, watching something easy to view. It's not exactly intellectual, though it can be fun escapism, which is nice. It's a typical adventure tale: save the princess, save the land from war, save the day.

The movie starts with very little explanation of characters or what has been going on with One Piece's overall plot, so it's not recommended that this be someone's introduction to the story. Rather than spending all their time at sea, they're in the desert. The title explains the gist pretty well, Luffy and his fellow pirates are trying to help out a princess. This is the first One Piece movie to be released in English, and it started out as number two in the Japanese box office. One Piece isn't just a television series it has also spun off into an array of movies, the eighth of which is The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta.
